BIR to check taxes of luxury car owners in Iloilo
The Bureau of Internal Revenue in Iloilo City will look into the tax payments of owners of high-end vehicles in the city.
BIR Revenue Revenue District 74 Officer Delia Demalata said the bureau lauded the president’s speech for showing that the new administration is keen on going after tax evaders.
Likewise, BIR has renewed strength in its campaign against tax evaders, especially the owners of multi-million cars in light with the SONA of President Noynoy Aquino.
It is noted that the Aquino stressed the case of one pawnshop owner who purchased a Lamborghini at an estimated cost of P26 million, but failed to pay his taxes. These high-end vehicles are imported abroad and were smuggled in the country, the president said.
Demalata said taxes coming from the owners of luxury cars will add to the income of the national coffers. BIR is also set to coordinate with the LTO in checking the number of high-end luxury vehicles in Iloilo City and see if the owners have paid their taxes promptly and correctly.
She said that owners of luxury cars should have a proportionate tax base on their income. She added that BIR will definitely impose fines on the owners of luxury vehicles if they are found to have evaded their tax obligations.
Demalata said the BIR will coordinate with the Justice Department, the Bureau of Customs and other authorities in filing tax evasion cases.
The BIR and the new administration should be stringent in imposing fines to “those who do not pay the right taxes,” she added. PNA
