Iloilo farmers get organic agri updates
Representatives of farmers associations and agricultural technologists in Iloilo province together with partners in the agriculture sector attended a two-day “Technology Updating in Organic Agriculture” that ended yesterday, at the Conference Room of the Provincial Capitol.
Provincial Agriculture Office chief Ildefonso Toledo, who welcomed the participants, said technology updating is very important in the light of the passage of the Organic Agriculture Act of 2010.
Also known as Republic Act 10068, it aims to undertake a comprehensive program to promote community-based organic agriculture systems which include farmer-produced purely organic fertilizers (compost, pesticides, other farm inputs); nationwide educational and promotional campaign for its use and processing; and, adoption of organic agricultural system as a viable alternative.
Toledo said the advocacy on organic agriculture had long been promoted by the provincial government through the PAO.
He said farmers in the province are very receptive about organic farming and many have already adopted the organic agriculture system.
Toledo said the adoption of organic agriculture is beneficial to the environment as it mitigates climate change, as he noted that chemical fertilizers produce greenhouse gases which intensify global warming.
