COMELEC to implement total gun ban during polls
The Commission on Elections will implement a total gun ban nationwide during the election period for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls.
Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal said the gun ban will be implemented from September 25 to November 10.
“The total gun ban, just like in the May 2010 elections, will be implemented for the Barangay and SK polls,” he said.
He said the COMELEC will implement the total gun ban as it was successful during the May 10 polls.
“Based on the assessment, the implementation of the gun ban had very positive feedback. So, even if the Philippine National Police, the Armed Forces of the Philippines agreed that it was a good total gun ban,” Larrazabal said.
Just like in the previous polls, the COMELEC will also grant exemptions, but they will decide on that when they meet with the authorities.
“Definitely, there will be gun ban without any exemptions except those exceptions granted during the May 10 elections, meaning to say security forces, so these will be the same exceptions,” he said.
However, Larrazabal reiterated that no exceptions will be given to private individuals.
Meanwhile, he said the COMELEC will conduct a command conference tomorrow with the officials of the PNP, AFP and the Department of Education.
The issues expected to be discussed are the implementation of gun ban and security, among others.*
