Events for senior citizens set
Various activities have been lined up for the elderly in Iloilo City to mark the “Linggo ng Nakatatandang Pilipino” from October 1 to 7.
Proclamation No. 470 signed by former President Fidel Ramos declares every first week of October as “Linggo ng Nakatatandang Pilipino” or the Elderly Filipino Week.
This year’s theme is “Nakatatanda: Tanglaw ng Bayan, Kaagapay sa Matuwid ng Daan.”
Gerardo Canonero, president of the Federation of Senior Citizens Associations of the Philippines Iloilo City Chapter Inc., said the elderly really look forward to the occasion every year as they actively participate in the celebration.
Canonero said about 28,000 older persons in the city have already applied and been issued of their FSCAP identification cards.
This year, the week-long event will kick-off with a mass and a motorcade around the city. This will be followed by a program in the afternoon at SM City Iloilo.
Other activities include choral and vocal solo contests on October 2; fellowship on October 3; folk dance and ballroom dance competitions on October 4; composo and binalaybay contests on October 5; and Search for King Lolo and Queen Lola on October 6. All these activities will be held in the afternoon at SM City Iloilo.
Also joining the celebration is the Regional Inter-Agency Committee for Older Persons in Western Visayas chaired by the Department of Social Welfare and Development 6.
The RIACOP will hold a program with the elderly of Asilo de Molo on October 7. It will also set up an information desk on the Implementing Rules and Regulations of Republic Act 9994 or Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010 during the activities at SM City Iloilo.*PIA6
