No drug test for candidates – COMELEC
The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in Iloilo City said “no drug test” is being required of barangay election candidates before filing their certificates of candidacy (CoCs).
This was stressed by City Election Assistant Officer Jonathan Sayno as some aspirants have been inquiring from their office if they need to undergo a drug test.
Sayno said a drug test is not part of the prerequisite in filing a CoC.
The drug test was required by the COMELEC in the 2007 elections, however, it was abolished later.
The screening of good and deserving barangay officials lay on the hands of the voters, Sayno said.
Meanwhile, Sayno said he is expecting more candidates to flock at their office today and during the last day of filing of CoCs on Wednesday next week.
October 8, according to feng shui experts, is a lucky day as a number that is moving upward, like 8, means good luck.
However, Ilonggos are still fond of “last minute” filing which is discouraged by the COMELEC.
Sayno said it would help if candidates can file their CoCs earlier as they could also act early if there is a problem with their CoCs.
A candidate can file a “sworn certificate of candidacy” in person or through a duly authorized representative from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
On October 13, the last day of filing, CoCs may be filed until 12 midnight.*
