7,378 candidates seeking posts in Iloilo City’s 180 brgys.
A total of 7,378 candidates from the 180 barangays in Iloilo City are running for various positions in the synchronized barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections on October 25.
Four hundred thirty-three candidates are running for barangay captain, including several incumbent village chiefs, while for councilman, 4,184.
For SK chairman, 465 candidates are listed while for SK councilor, 2,296.
Dennis Lumagdao of the Commission on Elections Provincial Office, said the City Election Office furnished them a list of the candidates in Iloilo City after the filing of certificates of candidacy ended midnight of Wednesday.
He said there is quite an increase in the number of candidates this year compared to the barangay and SK elections in 2007.
Voters
Meanwhile, Iloilo City has more than 40,000 newly registered voters based on the official list of the City Elections Office.
Assistant Election Officer Jonathan Sayno, however, said around 40,000 voters were also dropped from the rolls for failure to vote in the two previous elections. Some voters have also passed away.
Iloilo City has a total of 243,861 registered voters expected to cast their votes during the October 25 elections.
Jaro district has the most number of voters, with 60,767. It is followed by Molo, 41,522; City Proper, 36,439; Lapaz, 30,160; Mandurriao, 29,879; Arevalo, 25,578; and Lapuz, 19,516.
Sayno said the city has 344 clustered precincts that will be accommodated in 68 polling centers.*
