‘Enhanced rainfall from Oct. to Dec.’
Expect enhanced rainfall this October-December as the northeast monsoon period heightens, PAGASA OIC Administrator Graciano Yumul said in a press release.
Yumul said near normal to above normal rainfall condition is expected over most areas in Luzon and generally near normal for the rest of the country.
Early stages of cold conditions in the equatorial Pacific ocean that started in July continues to strengthen reaching the La Niña threshold, and a weak to moderate La Niña is expected to continue until early 2010.
He also said that the La Niña period is usually associated with above normal rainfall across most areas of the country during the last quarter of the year until early months of the following year.
The present La Niña episode may adversely affect domestic water supply, agriculture and the health sector, as it may cause flashfloods and rain-induced landslides in hazard-prone areas.
Meanwhile, all agencies and local government units are advised to implement precautionary measures with the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils in all levels mobilized.*PIA6
