4 traffic aides in ‘hot water’ for selling candies at work
Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog has recommended the termination of four traffic auxiliaries after they were found selling candies to jeepney drivers while on duty.
Mabilog said he has no business meddling in the private lives of these traffic auxiliaries but if they are using government time for their personnel interest, that would be another story.
“I have strictly emphasized that there should be no ‘sideline’ while they are on duty so they could focus on their jobs,” he said.
Mabilog said he has already sent a communication to the Commission on Elections asking to grant his request for the termination of the four traffic aides despite the election ban on the movement of government employees.
Some traffic aides are reportedly forcing drivers to buy their candies at P5 each.
“It’s a grave offense to harass drivers,” the mayor said.
Mabilog said he has received reports this modus operandi among traffic aides is already widespread.
Aside from the four, several traffic aides are also under monitoring for having “sidelines” at work.
Earlier, Mabilog has enforced a cleansing of the ranks of the city’s traffic enforcers, resulting to the termination of more than 10 traffic aides.
He said ineffective traffic aides should be fired and replaced by better personnel who could do their jobs alone or with less supervision.
Mabilog had also said traffic aides should do their mandated functions or they can look for another job.
“The city has no place for lax and abusive traffic aides,” he said.
Mabilog said the city government is paying these auxiliaries to implement and enforce traffic rules and regulations.*
