2 poll contenders in Jaro shoot each other
Two men who ran for village councilman in Brgy. Tabuc Suba in Jaro district, Iloilo City were wounded after shooting each other Tuesday night.
Police identified the wounded as Alejo Arellado, 50, and Nonito Igona, 53, who met at Petalsville Subdivision.
Arellado lost his bid while Igona was re-elected.
The incident also injured two persons, both Arellado’s companions, who were hit by a stray bullet.
Jerry Quibingco, 45, and Edmund Maigue, 47, who sustained minor wounds, were treated at West Visayas State University Medical Center.
Before the incident, the group of Arellado, who were on a drinking spree, saw Igona with his three companions.
Witnesses claimed at first, the two even greeted each other.
After a short talk, the two pulled their guns and shot each other.
Arellado was rushed to WVSUMC while Igona was confined at Iloilo Mission Hospital.
Chief Insp. Jay Malong of Jaro Police Station said investigators have yet to establish who fired first.
When they arrived at the scene of incident, the guns were already in the possession of two persons.
Investigators found three spent shells and a slug of unknown caliber.
Malong said they have yet to get the statement of Arellado, who is still in the intensive care unit.*
