Anti-littering, anti-jaywalking orientation-seminar set Nov. 5
The Iloilo City government and the Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Iloilo Chapter will jointly conduct an anti-littering and anti-jaywalking orientation-seminar for traffic aides, auxiliary police, and Philippine National Police personnel on November 5 at the Sangguniang Panlungsod conference hall.
City Administrator Norlito Bautista said the orientation-seminar is preparatory to the full implementation of the amended anti-jaywalking ordinance whose scope was expanded to cover areas outside of the central business district.
The amended ordinance took effect November 2, but Bautista said jaywalkers will only be warned and informed of their violations until November 15.
From November 16, however, the appropriate fines and penal provisions of the ordinance will be imposed.
Bautista said the amended ordinance, which was previously confined to the central business district, now covers Sen. Benigno Aquino Avenue (Diversion Road) and Luna St. in La Paz, in front of Gaisano City.
Speakers from the City Legal Office and the IBP will also tackle the anti-littering ordinance.
Bautista said not only pedestrians will be apprehended for littering, but also commuters or passengers of both private and public vehicles caught throwing candy wrappers, fruit peels and other litter.
He said an executive order deputizing traffic aides and auxiliary police as agents in authority empowered to make apprehensions will be signed by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog after he returns from an official trip in the United States.
The fine for jaywalking is P50, while the fine for littering is P500 for the first offense.*
