Protective cage for taxi drivers proposed anew
The Iloilo City Council has proposed that taxi operators install protective cage for drivers as a measure to protect them from robbers .
Perfecto Yap of the Association of Taxi Operators in Panay said they are in the process of asking their members whether they are amenable to the proposal.
Although in the previous years, he said, the same proposal was not fully implemented because of complaints from some passengers.
“We are considering all things to protect our drivers. We are looking at the legal implications of the proposal,” he said.
Currently, Yap said they are closely coordinating with the Philippine National Police about their security plan.
“We are coming up with a more useful and effective strategy, aside from the city’s proposal,” he said.
In the wake of several robbery holdups victimizing taxi drivers in the city and nearby towns, the ATOP and other similar groups had earlier agreed with the Iloilo City Police Office to enforce the “log in” and “log out” policy.
Under the system, a taxi driver, when going out of Iloilo City, must record his name, name of the taxi, its plate number, and number of passengers in the nearest police station.*
