Confab on kidney illness lauded
ROXAS CITY – Some 30 doctors from Capiz and Aklan provinces attended the recent seminar on urinalysis here sponsored by the National Kidney and Transplant Institute through its Renal Disease and Control Program (REDCOP).
Most of the participants were municipal health officers, chiefs of hospitals and medical technologists.
Dr. Ana Mae Belasoto of Dumalag, Capiz said the discussion on maximizing the utility of a basic tool for diagnosis and prevention of kidney diseases is a very useful especially with the increasing number of renal diseases in the country.
Belasoto said the participants have been guided accordingly especially on the impression and diagnosis of renal diseases as spelled out in the 10 renal syndromes.
Other doctors said they hope to lessen cases of urinary tract infection (UTI) in their respective areas as a result of the intensive lectures and inputs they have learned.
During the seminar, Dr. Arlene S. Muñoz, central medical coordinator of REDCOP Philippine Renal Disease Registry, said UTI should be the last to be considered in the diagnosis of a patient.
She presented some of the symptoms like what many doctors have also observed.
Capiz Provincial Health Medical Technologist Leo Biclar requested the REDCOP to conduct a refresher course for medical technologists to further improve their capability, particularly in handling laboratory activities on urinalysis.
Discussions on the basic anatomy urinalysis and on urinalysis and the 10 clinical syndrome in nephrology were discussed by NKTI adult nephrology consultant Dr. Marie Angeline Ledesma-Gumba, while Muñoz discussed the approach to the diagnosis of kidney diseases.
The REDCOP team from Manila also included Angel Catindig of the Philippine Information Agency-Central Office, Medical Technologist Minda Quitoriano and Laura Borjal of the REDCOP-NKTI.
