Fulfilling a GK Village dream through sharing of treasured recipes
They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery. So when Assumption Iloilo was gearing for its centennial celebration (1910-2010), Batch 1979 was thinking of what projects they would undertake that would help their class raise funds for the Assumption School – the sports center – and their own special class project. It was easier to take a short cut and follow a tried and tested formula than concocting a new idea that might be harder to sell.
First off was to follow what other corporate and great people did for humanity – the project head, Marirose Cacho – thought of creating the 1st Assumption Centennial Legacy Village. This was a joint project with Gawad Kalinga and would provide decent homes to 30 households in an area that will have a school and livelihood center. To help fund this dream, Gina Beltran Gallegos thought of following the path of San Lorenzo Class ’79 and create a cookbook that would raise funds for the project. She called all their classmates to share their time-tested and best kept family secrets with the public.
During the centennial celebration (August 10 to 15), Iloilo Class ’79 did brisk sales of their cookbook. But there were still more to be sold and last November 6 and 14, with the generous support of the Assumption Alumnae Association, San Lorenzo (AAA), Iloilo Class ’79 introduced their cookbook in Manila and sold it at the annual Assumption Bazaar at the Hotel Intercon in Makati.
The cookbook offers recipes from different cuisine – being from Iloilo it offered its signature dishes of batchoy, binakol, pancit molo and the food that the girls, who are now based in Europe, the United States and Asia, have developed a taste for and learned to cook so that they can share the discovery of good food with visiting friends.
The cookbook has proven that Assumption, indeed, has no borders. It can adapt to the cuisine of their adopted land, it can be enjoyed by those living in the motherland and most of all, our solidarity to help one another in projects that emulate teachings learned from the Assumption Foundress, St. Eugenie cuts across regions, whether you are from Luzon or Visayas, Assumptionists stand proud to extend a helping hand.
Also being sold are Assumption Iloilo bag hooks.
Copies of the cookbook and the bag hooks can be bought at Kultura at the SM Stores, and AAA Office in Assumption College, San Lorenzo Village, Makati.*
