All set for the 16th West Visayan Conference on History and Culture
The UPV-Center for West Visayan Studies in cooperation with the Office of Cultural Affairs Central Philippine University, cordially invites social/science teachers from public and private schools and universities, culture enthusiasts, artists, scholars and researchers, and representatives from government agencies and local government units in Western Visayas, to the 16th Conference on West Visayan History and Culture. The affair will be held at the 2nd Floor, EMC Building, Central Philippine University, on November 17-18, 2005. The theme for this year's conference is 'Movements of People: Tumandok kag Pangayaw in Western Visayas'. Continuing a tradition that started in 1990, this year's conference is a venue for sharing of insights on various topics dealing with movements of people. Moreover, the conference aims to examine reasons why people move, their modes of movement and adaptation, as well as to look into the social, economic, political and cultural implications of migration.
This year's paper presentors include a Metro Bank Best Teacher Awardee, Dr. Ma. Cecilia Locsin-Nava, and 2005 Palanca Award winner John Iremil Teodoro. Dr. Nava of Bacolod City will present 'Migration and the Taming of the Negros Plantation Frontier.' On the other hand, Prof. Grace Edmar Elizar del Prado of Western Visayas College of Science and Technology will read a paper on the 'Temporary Migration and Its Effects on the Economic Performance of Western Visayas.' Two papers will tackle on Ilonggo migration in Singapore: 'Ang Sugilanon Bilang Katas ng Singapore' by Prof. Teodoro and 'Being Family Across Space: A Case Study of Ilonggo Migrant Workers in Singapore' by Ms. Ramonita Pico. Teodoro and Pico are both from the University of San Agustin.
A paper on 'Iloilo City as Host Community of Japanese Settlers in the Early 20th Century' will be delivered by the newly appointed UPV Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension, Dr. Ma. Luisa Mabunay. Prof. Tita Torio and Melanie Padilla of UPV Division of Social Sciences will be coming up with a paper on 'Neo-Ilonggos: An Immigration History'. Studies on Asian migration to Iloilo will also be the focus of papers of Prof. Joefe Santarita of UPV Division of Social Sciences entitled 'The Tie that Binds; A Thai Mercantile Experience in Iloilo City' and Ms. Jenelie Acosa's 'Punjabi Indians in Iloilo City'.
Two papers will tackle on the Ati in Boracay Island, Aklan. Dr. Alicia Magos of UPV will present 'The Negritos (Ati) of Boracay, Aklan' while Prof. Celedonia Hilario of Aklan State University will read a paper on 'Pangayaw of Boracay, Aklan: A Case Study'. Lastly, Dr. Fely David of Central Philippine University will highlight the condition of Ilonggo nurses in the British Isles in her paper 'Working and Living Conditions of Filipino Nurses in Dublin, Ireland'.
The Conference fee is P700.00 inclusive of lunch and snacks for two days, conference kit, abstract of papers, and certificates. For teachers, Dep-Ed and CHED Memos will be issued upon request.
