PAG-ASA prepares for 'Typhoon and Flood Awareness Week' observance
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) here in this city is set to firm up their preparations in line with the country's observance of "Typhoon and Flood Awareness Week".
Earlier, President Arroyo has directed PAG-ASA to lead the awareness information campaign on disaster preparedness especially during the rainy season. PAGASA was also tasked to assist private and government agencies in the conduct of awareness program.
PAGASA - Iloilo Chief Meteorological Officer Rafael Tapales said his office is always ready to assist groups or agencies that need speakers or lecturers on their seminars related to typhoon and flood disaster awareness.
To recall, in April 4 last year, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed Presidential Proclamation No. 823 declaring every third week of June as "Typhoon and Flood Awareness Week" in the country.
In the proclamation, the President said it is recognized that the country is exposed to natural hazards and prone to man-made hazards because of neglect of environment and poor awareness of physical laws and changes in nature.
"Scientific knowledge can be used as an effective guide to ensure the safety, well being and economic security of people and environment", President Arroyo said.
She also pointed out in the proclamation the need to educate the public and promote hazards and mitigation awareness through public information dissemination campaigns on typhoon and flood awareness mitigation.
