Unity vs poverty call of Independence Day observance
A short but meaningful program marked the 108th Independence Day observance here in Iloilo as city local officials called on the people to unite and rally behind government programs and efforts that eradicate poverty, injustice and political conflicts.
Lone district of Iloilo City Congressman Raul Gonzalez, Jr. said that as a big family of Filipinos, which may be having conflicts and disagreements at all times, the people should find the observance of Philippine Independence as an occasion to unite as a strong nation.
Gonzalez said that in celebrating the birth of this nation the Filipinos should pick up from the sacrifices of their heroes and stand up as one against the problems the country is facing.
Board Member Perla Zulueta, in her closing remarks said that the Filipinos are still facing threats to independence every day of their lives, with the need to clothe, feed, shelter and send children to school, which the poorest among them could hardly do.
She also said that more than just celebrating is the need to be vigilant so that the freedom won by the Filipino heroes would be the rallying point for unity, regardless of political affiliation or religion.
Zulueta added that the only way to achieve a real strong republic is to unite against poverty.
The program held at the Plaza Libertad in Iloilo was participated in by employees, government agencies, private sectors, the media and barangay contingents who together released white balloons and doves and took turns in offering flowers at the Rizal Monument.
