City exec respects CBCP stand on cha-cha
City Mayor Jerry Treñas acknowledged the power of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) when it comes to political issues affecting the country such as the move to change the Philippine Constitution.
Treñas said CBCP's stand opposing constitutional change through a Constituent Assembly is considered as a setback in the effort of the Union of Local Authorities in the Philippines (Ulap) and Sigaw ng Bayan to push for the changing of the Constitution though a people's initiative.
The CBCP through `Archbishop Angel Lagdameo recently came out with a stand strongly opposing the plan to change the Constitution via people's initiative. The CBCP stand which supports the changing of the Constitution if done through a Constitutional Convention was read in last Sunday's masses in the entire country. The same stand will be read in other masses and posters and banners will be placed outside the churches to manifest the CBCP stand.
Treñas observed that the CBCP always takes a stand on issues affecting the people. The country is predominantly Catholic and the voice of the church is a force to reckon with, he said.
Treñas added, this is the beauty of democracy in the country as everyone is free to express his opinion on whatever issues.
Nevertheless, the mayor said the issue on Charter Change is still to be decided by the Supreme Court.
