1st Mayor Jerry Treñas Badminton Cup unveils Sept. 30
A new era for the burgeoning sport of badminton in this part of the country kicks off Saturday with the holding of the 1st Mayor Jerry P. Treñas Badminton Cup.
To be staged at the Citi Sports Badminton Courts in Mandurriao district, the tournament draws together 104 pairs of badminton players not only from homegrown enthusiasts but from as far as Cebu and Bacolod cities and the other provinces of Panay. No less than Errol Chan, coach of the Philippine National Team will be on hand to grace the tournament which will be officiated tournament officials, umpires, and linesmen duly accredited by the Philippine Badminton Association, represented here by Ong Kim Sing.
The tournament is an initial offering from the recently formed by Iloilo-Panay Badminton Club, Inc. (IPBC) a non-stock, non-profit corporation duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Headed by Mrs. Gina Srabia-Espinosa, the IPBC aims to promote public interest and participation in the sport through tournaments, clinics, seminars, summer camps, trainings, and workshops.
“We took the initiative of organizing an association to serve as a medium that will bring the Ilonggos to a level playing field in the sport of badminton,” Mrs. Espinosa said.
“Badminton is very popular now, we must strike while the iron is hot,” she added.
The IPBC is duly accredited by the Philippine Badminton Association which is the national sport association recognized by the sports world governing body, the International Badminton Federation.
