Concepcion, 9 other outstanding LGUs cited
“For the past five years, we kept our silence in the midst of the political noise and remained focus in the fight against poverty. And I want to thank all of you for your solidarity and faith to help me improve our economy and our countrymen," President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said as she cited the ten outstanding Local Government Units.
The ten outstanding Local Government Units (LGUs) are: Concepcion, Iloilo;Capoocan, Leyte;Bulacan; Pasay City; Negros Oriental; Maitum, Saranggani; Malalag, Davao del Sur; Munoz, Nueva Ecija; Naga City; and Zamboanga City.
These LGUs were recently awarded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) for actively pushing the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG) in their respective communities under the Galing Pook program.
The Malacañang press report said that the UNDP-Galing Pook Special citation on Local Capacity Innovations is an annual awards program that identifies and showcases the country's best local governance programs and practices, particularly those that have been adopted and continuously demonstrated, expanded, replicated and institutionalized to help LGUs meet the MDG.
President Arroyo told the Municipal Mayors, during her address at the 16th League of Municipalities General Assembly and the National Summit on Hunger and Population, that the strong demonstration of trust in the Philippines by the world community is a result of the reforms and peace initiatives of her administration with the help of the local governments.
The UN Millennium Development Goals are a set of global targets espoused by the UN to address poverty, education, gender, health, and nutrition issues and diseases such as HIV/AIDS and environmental issue by 2015.
