Cops, traffic aides lauded for peaceful All Saints Day
The observance of All Saints Day in Iloilo City was generally peaceful and orderly, which is why City Mayor Jerry Treñas said police and and traffic aides deserve to be cited.
Cops and traffic aides were not allowed to take a leave of absence in order to maintain peace and order and contain heavy traffic in all cemeteries. They were all fielded in the different cemeteries. The presence of cops deter the commission of the crimes.
Cops conducted inspection at the main entrance of every cemetery in the city. Several bladed weapons were either confiscated or placed in the custody of the detailed police. They also made rounds inside the cemetery.
Treñas said no major incident happened in the city except the one which took place at the Christ the King cemetery in Ungka, Jaro. He did not elaborate on what happened but he was informed by newly installed city director S/Supt. Wesley Barayuga that the incident was more of a family matter.
Prior to the holding of the All Saints Day, the chief executive issued a directive to the city police to ban the carrying of bladed weapons, liquor, cards and musical instruments inside the cemetery. This is to prevent any crimes and at the same time observe the affair with solemnity.
November 1 is All Saints Day but because of tradition, Filipinos visit the cemeteries and offered flowers, candles, prayers and even food. It is supposed to be the day to honor the saints whose feast are not included in the liturgical year. And November 2 is All Souls Day. The Catholic Church was allowed to have three masses on the same day.
