City generates P4.4M from drivers' penalties
The city government generated more than P4 million pesos from the fines and penalties imposed against erring drivers based in last year's record of apprehensions and its corresponding penalties. The fines were collected from the 33,497 violators.
In the comparative report provided by the Traffic Management and Engineering Unit (TMEU) to the office of Mayor Jerry Treñas, the fines and penalties reached to P4,442,310. It is much higher than the record in 2006 which only registered P4,276,180 collections.
The same report showed that the number of driver violators in 2007 decreased by 49 percent with 33,497 violators compared in 2006 with 68,960. It was noted however that though the number of violators decreased the amount of fines and penalties increased, from P4,276,180 in 2006 to P4,442,310 in 2007.
The total number of driver violators from January to July 2007 was not reflected on the said TMEU report. It only showed the fines and penalties collected for the said period amounting P1,782,640. The report which was signed by TMEU Licensing-In-Charge Carlos S. Thompson Jr. made a notation that from January to middle of July the licensing office was under the supervision of Rafaelito Jamolo. Jamolo was replaced because of numerous complaints against him.
The month of October posted the highest record of collection amounting to P483,530 with 6,294 violators. The month of August comes next with P482,220 with 6,188 violators. The month of November P473,120 with 5,554 violators.
In the December 2007 record of apprehension and its corresponding penalties, there were 4,563 licenses released by the TMEU. The fines collected reached to P410,160 and another P4,300 from pedicab (traysikad) drivers.
For the past three years, the collection of fines and penalties continue to increase with P3,306,620 in 2005; P4,276,180 in 2006 and P4,442,310 in 2007.
