LGUs have until December to convert open dumpsite into sanitary landfill
Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Jose Lito Atienza Jr. said local government units (LGUs) have until end of this year to comply with the provisions of the Republic Act 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act especially on the conversion of open dumpsites into sanitary landfills.
Atienza during the launching of the regional people's hour said 'the meter is running' as two months ago, the LGUs were already reminded about the matter.
He explained that LGUs should be aware that 'indiscriminate open dumping is not allowed.'
"Our efforts dictate that local government units now comply with Republic Act 9003. All dumpsites will have to be converted into controlled landfills. If they could not put up a sophisticated waste disposal system as stated in the law, at least they can establish a controlled landfill," he said.
He added those who failed to comply will have no choice but to face the Green Court that was established by the agency specifically to run after violators of RA 9003.
"We are now prepared for this. We have green courts now organized, we have green prosecutors trained, we have green investigators oriented and drafted. All this will be fast," he added.
Atienza added he will not have second thoughts of penalizing LGU officials who will be found non-compliant of the law.
At present, he disclosed that there are around 900 open dumpsites that are still operational all over the country. (PNA)
