UP Visayas student qualifies in regional Stat Quiz
Rosa Lea A. Baldevarona of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas (UPV) in Miag-ao will be the representative of the province of Iloilo and Guimaras in the 2008 Philippine Statistics Quiz Regional Finals to be held at National Economic Development Authority RDC Hall on November 13, 2008.
Baldevarona bested 27 other contestants coming from the different colleges and universities in the city and province of Iloilo who took part in the provincial level competition held at the Iloilo National High School in Lapaz district last October 28.
Michele Olivares, also from UPV Miag-ao came second while Abraham Porcal of Western Visayas College of Science & Technology, third.
Baldevarona won P2,000 cash prize while Olivares, P1,500 and Porcal, P1,000. Each also received a certificate of recognition.
The Philippine Statistics Quiz is an annual contest conducted nationwide participated in by freshman students enrolled in colleges and universities in the 17 regions of the country.
Started in 1992, it aims to instill the value of statistics among students and to measure the effectiveness of high school statistics curriculum.
This year's contest is being managed by the National Statistics Office and the Philippine Statistical Association in coordination with the Commission on Higher Education. (PIA)
