DOH honors barangays in WV with best sanitation practices
Two barangays in Western Visayas won the title as "Barangays with Best Sanitation Practices for Environmental Health" under the urban/city and rural municipal categories.
The winners were recognized during the 2008 regional awarding for stakeholders and partners of the Department of Health-Center for Health Development 6 (DOH-CHD 6) held at the Iloilo Grand Hotel here.
Barangay Quinagaringan, Passi City was declared as winner under the urban/city category while Barangay Tigbanaba, Igbaras won in the rural/municipal category. These winners are all from the province of Iloilo.
They were chosen from among the five finalists in the region to also include Barangay Badiang, New Lucena; Barangay Astorga, Badiangan and Barangay Aguigay, Janiuay all of Iloilo province.
The winners were rated based on the following criteria: household with sanitary toilet, 50 percent; household with access to safe water supply, 25 percent; decline rate in the morbidity/mortality rate of diarrheal diseases for the past three years, 20 percent and local sanitation initiatives, five percent.
The search was open to all barangays with coverage of at least 75 percent sanitary toilet and at least 85 percent water supply.
It was initiated by the DOH and its CHDs nationwide in partnership with local government units as part of the activities in the 2008 International Year of Sanitation.
The search intends to challenge all local government to showcase their best practices on sanitation specifically on their water supply, sanitary toilet facilities, declining rate in the morbidity and mortality for diarrheal diseases and local initiatives related to environmental sanitation. (PNA)
