Artist Roberto Vargas is an impressionist. Impressionism, as an art style, began in the 19th century, characterized by visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on light and its changing qualities, ordinary subject matter (Roberto prefers sceneries), and the inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience.
Roberto’s artworks are based on reality and changes its presentation by how he sees it. Such is the style of Jose Blanco, a national artist whom he admires.
Roberto is a draftsman of the Provincial Engineering Office of Guimaras, having finished Architectural Drafting in Western Visayas College of Science and Technology in 1982. He has joined varied exhibits in Guimaras, Roxas City, Iloilo City. He specializes in oil and acrylic painting as well as sculpture and crafts made of indigenous materials.
He has joined competitions like the Art Association of the Philippines and the Civil Service Centennial National Painting Contest where he’s a member and finalist, respectively. He is a member of the WVCST Alumni Association and the Pinta Isla Group based in Guimaras.
While many local artist lament the hardships that they experience, Roberto sees his gift as a blessing that has benefited him and his family.
“Art has played an important part in my life. I don’t have problems with the kids’ school projects and my wife’s visual needs as a teacher because I know how to do them myself. My commissioned art works have helped me meet my family’s needs apart from my income as a government employee. That’s why we were able to send our kids to school,” he said. He is married to Analy Hinojales and they have five children who are all good in the arts. “One of my children, who’s graduating from Mass Communications, is good in drawing comics and has been winning in competitions,” he said.
“I am happy and contented with what I have achieved,” he concluded.
