Migo Lorenzo Ildesa
Westbridge grade-schooler among 14 Filipino students to clinch award in Int’l Aussie Math Tilt
Not only Filipinos, but certainly all Ilonggos have at least one good news to cite in these recent months that were mostly about the awesome damage of typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.
Miguel Lorenzo Ildesa from PAREF-Westbridge School is one of fourteen Prize Awardees in the Australian Mathematics Competition last August 6, 2009. He is one of only 14 Filipino students who won this award. Yielding 14 Prize Awards and 43 High Distinction Certificates, these top Pinoy “mathletes” have proven once again the Filipino brand of initiative and resilience.
The students received their awards in the AMC awarding ceremonies held on October 19 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel in Pasay City. The guests of honor were Senator Alan Peter Cayetano and Dr. Peter Taylor, executive director of the Australian Mathematics Trust (AMT), which runs the AMC.
One older topnotcher that Migo can certainly look up to is a sophomore student of St. Stephen’s High School in Sta. Cruz, Manila who got a perfect score. Julius Vincent Sy was one of only 20 students worldwide who scored 100 percent in this year’s AMC.
The 13 other Filipino topnotchers in the AMC were Amiel Sy and Emiliano Tan from Philippine Science High School-Main; Seanne Ng, Adrian Sy, Czarina Lao and Audrey Lao from St. Jude Catholic School; Justin Edric Yturzaeta from Jubilee Christian Academy; John Russell Virata from Gideon Academy; Alvin Uy Lim from Quezon City Science High School; Lormes Pedeglorio from Butuan City Special Education Center; Jake Gacuan from the University of the Philippines; and Aldric Cristobal Reyes from Chiang Kai Shek College.
Fifty-six other students also won top honors in the AMC, held at the same time last August in Australia and 35-plus other countries worldwide, including the country.
It can be remembered that Migo, a varsity member of the Westbridge Football team, also contributed to the 16-gold medal harvest of the country in late August in the recent 5th International Mathematics Contest in Singapore. Migo is the son of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) 6 Director Russell Ildesa and Atty. Tess Ildesa.
ABOUT THE CONTEST. The AMC is a mathematics competition supervised by the Australian Mathematics Trust for students from year 3 up to year 12 in Australia, and their equivalent grades in other countries. The Filipino math wizards, based on the standards of the contest, bested over 2,000 other Filipino elementary and high school students, administered here by AMT representatives, Mathematics Trainers’ Guild-Philippines (MTG) and the Science Education Institute of the Department of Science and Technology.
