The winners in the regional search for the Most Child-Friendly Cities and Municipalities in Western Visayas for 2009 were recently awarded by the Department of Social Welfare and Development 6.
The awardees include Jordan, Guimaras for the 1st to 3rd class municipality category, New Lucena for the 4th to 6th class category, Talisay City for component city category and Bacolod City for the highly-urbanized city category.
The municipalities of Jordan and New Lucena also qualified for the national level of this yearly undertaking which is pursuant to Executive Order No. 184, series of 1999 entitled “Establishing the Presidential Award for the Child-Friendly Municipalities and Cities”.
The award is considered as a self-assessment mechanism of the level of child-friendliness of a particular city and municipality and at the same time gives recognition to these LGUs that put in place a “child-friendly” environment.
DSWD 6 Technical Assistance Division Chief Rebecca Geamala presented the awards to Jordan Mayor Cresente Chavez, New Lucena Mayor Liecel Mondejar-Seville, Talisay City Mayor Eric Saratan and Bacolod City Councilor Homer Bais during the awarding ceremony held at the DSWD 6 office in Molo, Iloilo City.
Each winner received a plaque of recognition and P50,000 check.
The awarding rite highlighted the 59th anniversary celebration of DSWD which was also attended by other awardees who were recognized for their contribution and support to the agency in assisting the poor and the disadvantaged.
Msgr. Meliton Oso, Director of the Archdiocesan Social Action Center, was the event’s guest speaker. (PIA)
