WV voters near 4 M mark
A total of 3,950,634 registered voters in Western Visayas is expected to participate in the country’s first-ever automated national and local elections on May 10, 2010.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) regional office here said the province of Negros Occidental posted the highest number of registered voters with 1,556,448, followed by Iloilo with 1,262,639, Capiz with 431,368, Aklan with 316,886, Antique with 289,240, and Guimaras with 94,053.
Meanwhile, a total of 1,458 local elective posts for congressman, governor, vice governor, city and municipal mayor and vice mayor, and provincial, city and municipal sanggunian members is up for grabs in the region in the coming elections.
Region 6 has six provinces, two highly urbanized and 14 component cities, 117 municipalities, 4,061 barangays, and 18 congressional districts. Comelec has established 25,943 voting precincts with 6,713 clustered precincts in the region.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has assured the Filipinos that the 2010 elections will push through as scheduled.
She has also stressed that the success of the automated May elections is crucial to the country’s political and economic stability in 2010, while its failure or deferment could trigger unrest.
The automation of the electoral process is one of the President’s 10-point pro-poor agenda. (PIA 6)
