Repair, clean up, clearing activities underway for opening of classes
Roads, canals and highways leading to schools are now being repaired and cleared of obstacles as opening of classes nears.
Engr. Cecile Contreras, OIC, Maintenance Division of the Department of Public Works and Highways 6 said personnel in their district engineering offices have already been mobilized to do the job.
Contreras said foremost in their activities is the repainting of the Pedestrian lanes leading to schools, declogging of canals and removal of billboards and other obstructions to traffic along the vicinities of the schools.
DPWH Regional Director Rolando Asis said he has instructed all the DPWH district engineering offices to remove all tarpaulin billboards, including campaign materials left by candidates in the last elections, to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and guarantee the safety of motorists and commuters during opening of classes.
He said the cleaning and declogging of canals is intended to contain flooding as well as prevent the spread of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
Asis also said that he has further instructed his people to fast track the repair and/or construction of all school buildings in Negros, Panay and Guimaras.
He said DPWH has already constructed about 245 classrooms under the CY 2009 DEpEd Regular School Building Program in Western Visayas. (PIA6/ESS)
