Liga prexy opposes brgy polls postponement
Iloilo City’s Liga ng mga Barangay (LnB) president said that there is no reason to postpone the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) and Barangay elections in October.
LnB Iloilo City chapter president Irene Ong said that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) must proceed with the elections despite calls by politicians to postpone the exercise.
Ong said that it is high time that the public choose a new set of barangay and youth officials now that the national election is finished.
Ong said that the people should now be given a chance to choose their baranggay leaders and that the Comelec should uphold this right.
She also said that the barangay polls will change the landscape of political leadership and that the captains will know if they still have followers left.
“We don’t want to be called barangay captains without followers,” she said.
The Liga president also said that SK and the barangay leaders are crucial in implementing the projects of the city government to the grassroots. It would be unwise to leave old barangay leaders in their post.
Meanwhile, Ong admitted that most village heads in the city do not want barangay and SK elections since they wanted to stay in the post indefinitely. Still, she said that this would be hypocritical especially if the constituents do not cooperate with barangay ordinances and projects.
There are 180 barangays in Iloilo City, the most number in the whole Philippines. (PNA)
