Ilonggo culture in Charter Day
The 73rd Charter Day celebration of Iloilo City highlights Ilonggo culture with the theme “Dakbanwang Iloilo Bugal Ko” (Pride of Place), with activities that will kick off with a thanksgiving mass at Robinsons Place Iloilo food court at 8 a.m. today.
The 40-day celebration climaxing on August 25 aims to create public awareness of the history and development of Iloilo as a City; arouse community sense of pride of place; and showcase the celebration as link to culture and heritage.
From July 16 to 31, Robinsons Place will also host exhibits in the themes of “Ilonggo Arts and Crafts,” “Iloilo Then and Now,” “Ilonggo Way of Life,” and “Images of Iloilo City” organized by City Planning and Development Office, City Engineer’s Office, Department of Trade and Industry, Iloilo City Cultural Heritage Conservation Council, Photographic Society of Iloilo, Photo Artists League of Iloilo and Department of Education.
Displays are also proposed for two other venues like Gaisano City on July 28 to August 10 and SM City on August 11 to 25.
The Ilonggo Music Festival will be presented through competitions like Iloilo Got Talent on August 27 and Iloilo City Hymn Writing Contest on August 28 at Freedom Grandstand to be sponsored by ABS-CBN, DepEd, and Iloilo City Police Office.
The Search for Mr. and Ms. Iloilo City will be sponsored by Association of Barangay Captains, Barangay Affairs, GMA, DepEd and CTDO on August 24, 6 p.m., at Freedom Grandstand.
An Oratorical Contest will be supported by ABS-CBN and DepEd on August 25.
Meanwhile, food festivals of Ilonggo dishes are scheduled on August 27 to 28 at Delgado Street, City Proper to be organized by ABS-CBN; Iloilo Hotels, Resorts and Restaurants Association, Iloilo Producers Association, and DTI.
Also in the making is the Search for Dungog sang Dakbanwa sang Iloilo which envisions to honor “Great Ilonggo Achievers.”*
