La Niña to hit WV in next 2 months
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration has warned Western Visayas residents of the onset of La Niña phenomenon in the next two months, a report of the Philippine News Agency said.
La Niña is defined as cooler than normal sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific ocean that impact global weather patterns.
Local PAGASA chief Rafael Tapales said that based on global advisories, the June to August 2010 weather condition is favorable to the development of La Niña phenomenon.
Tapales gave the report during the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council 6 meeting at the Police Regional Office 6 Wednesday.
According to PAGASA forecast on tropical cyclones, one to two will come this July. “We already have one tropical cyclone now happening with Basyang,” Tapales said.
Two to three tropical cyclones were forecast to happen August next month, and in September and October, three to four each month.
Chief Supt. Samuel Pagdilao Jr., police regional director, urged all sector representatives present to make preparations.
A communication structure should be established to each even the farthest area of the region, he said.
The RDCC 6 Communication and Warning Group chaired by Engr. Antonio Monroy said the Oplan Ugnayan launched in 2007 has now 186 volunteers in the region who could relay immediate information in case of a disaster.
The Oplan Ugnayan also has 40 volunteers from outside Region 6 and four internationally. The international volunteers are based in the United States of America, Australia, and Qatar.*
