Treñas wants chairmanship of local gov’t body
Iloilo City Rep. Jerry P. Treñas said he is eyeing the chairmanship of the committee on local government in the House of Representatives, a report of the Philippine News Agency said.
Treñas said he is hoping that he will get the committee chairmanship because he has several programs and innovations to introduce.
The committee should become a partner of local government units in easing the delivery of services to the people, he said.
Treñas said he aims to focus on laws that urge cities and LGUs to continue the best practices and programs of the previous mayors and councils.
He also wanted LGUs to come up with programs that will help them boost their income and not rely solely on the annual Internal Revenue Allotment from the national government, he added.
Treñas, who served as Iloilo City mayor for nine years and as president of the League of Cities in the Philippines, said he has personally seen the plight of LGUs and he knows how to help the mayors improve their governance strategies.
The House committee on local government deals with matters directly and principally relating to autonomous regions, provinces, cities, municipalities and barangays, including their revenues and expenditures.
