Removal of old MRFs ordered; new trash collection scheme set
Obsolete materials recovery facilities in some villages in Iloilo City should be removed and converted into useful projects, Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said.
In his visits to some villages, the mayor noticed that several MRFs are already dilapidated and no longer serve its purpose.
MRF is a site for sorting and separating garbage and solid waste collected from sources such as households, commercial and industrial businesses
Purposely, it was designed to recover as much as recyclable and degradable materials as possible from the mainstream so that it could be used in compost-making processes or other environment-friendly purposes.
Mabilog has already ordered the City Solid Waste Management to check and evaluate the functions of these MRFs in their respective villages.
Unused MRFs must be abolished soon while useful MRFs should be retained to continue their operations, he said.
Mabilog said the barangay council should know how to deal with their recycled garbage with or without the MRF.
NEW SCHEME
Meanwhile, a new garbage collection scheme will be implemented in Iloilo City starting next week.
Engineer Raul Gallo of the Office of Public Service said residents are advised to personally bring out their segregated solid wastes to the collection trucks on the given hour and day for their village.
Gallo said recyclable garbage will be collected on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday while the biodegradable wastes will be collected on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
Garbage truck personnel will not collect garbage bags which are not segregated into recyclable and biodegradable wastes, he said.
All collected garbage will be brought to the Calajunan dumpsite in Mandurriao district.
