73 couples wed before mayor
Seventy-three indigent couples in Iloilo City were married yesterday in civil rites officiated by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, with Councilors Nielex Tupas, Rodel Agado and Lyndon Acap serving as principal sponsors.
The mass wedding ceremony sponsored by the City Civil Registrar’s Office was one of the highlights of the city’s 73rd Charter Day celebration which culminates Wednesday.
Mabilog told the newly-weds to take care of their union, through their abiding love and responsibility to each other.
The couples were also required by the City Government to plant a seedling at the Calajunan Eco-Park in Mandurriao district. The trees will be registered under their name.
The innovation was implemented by Mabilog to help take care of the environment.
City Civil Registrar Romeo Caesar Manikan Jr. said the mass wedding is a simple but meaningful event for couples who cannot afford to pay for the expensive wedding church ceremony and reception.
Couples were also exempted from paying the usual fees.
The Robinsons Place Iloilo, Mang Inasal, and the Iloilo City Hall Press Corps supported the event.*
