Plan for Old Capitol repair in place
Preparations for the restoration of the old Iloilo Provincial Capitol is underway, Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. said.
The P20-million restoration is expected to cost P20 million.
Defensor said there is already a plan for the old Capitol restoration as it was part of the work of architect William Coscolluela when he designed the New Iloilo Provincial Capitol.
“We want the old provincial Capitol to become a symbol of the glorious past of the province… a tourist attraction. At the same time, we want to make it a functional structure,” he said.
Defensor said that a bridge, to be built behind the old capitol, will link the old building to the new capitol.
Existing structures on both sides of the old capitol will be removed to make it look like the original structure.
The old Capitol building became a national historical site after the National Historical Institute formally recognized the Old Capitol as a historical landmark through a marker installed on its walls.
The marker was unveiled on April 11, 2010, exactly 109 years after the old capitol became the seat of the civil government of Iloilo on April 11, 1901, as stated in the marker.*
