Chess tourney winners bared
ROXAS CITY – Barangay Cagay won the championship title in the inter-barangay chess tournament organized by the Roxas City Plaza Chess Association Inc. on August 28 and 29 at the Seminar Room of City Hall.
The champion team, who garnered 17 points, is composed of George Aman, Harold Deluso, and Ivan Escalada. They received P3,000 cash and a trophy from Mayor Angel Alan Celino.
Barangay Dinginan (12 points), comprised of Joy Bernada, Gryan Alsagon, Ronel Bryle Alsagon, and Vicente Corros, was first runner-up and received P2,000 cash and a trophy from Vice Mayor Ronnie Dadivas.
Barangay Punta Tabuc (11 points), with team members Eddie Saludaga, Ben Billones, Hanz Tutica, and Benny Cortes, placed second runner-up and went home with P1,000 cash and a trophy from Councilor Erwin Sicad.
Barangay Libas (11 points), composed of Ariel Andrada, Rommel Arellano, Ryan del Rosario and Neil Panelo, was third runner-up and got P800 cash and trophy from Councilor James Matthew Viterbo.
Barangay Milibili (10.5 points), with team members Leopoldo Moscoso, Nonong Tumanon, Junmar Natanuan and Winston Ramos, was fourth runner-up and received P600 cash and trophy from Councilor Julius Abela.
The individual championship winners were: Ariel Andrada, Board 1, Brgy. Libas (6 points), P1,000 cash from Councilor Powell del Rosario; Harold Deluso, Board 2, Brgy. Cagay ( 6 points), P700, from Councilor Jennifer Ann Anisco; Ivan Escalada, Board 3, (6 points), P500.00, from Councilor Emmanuel Billones Jr.
Manuel Cambe, president of the Roxas City Plaza Chess Association Inc., said eight barangays participated in the round-robin tournament.
These are barangays IV, VII, Cagay, Dinginan, Libas, Milibili and Punta Tabuc.
Cambe said Mayor Celino has been very supportive of the chess association’s activities.
The mayor has pledged to put up a chess center at the city plaza and a big chess court with assistance from Eddie Saludaga, the association’s board chairman.
A monthly chess tournament will be conducted to further improve the skills of the members and invited players, Cambe added.*
