‘Use crossing lanes, overpasses to avoid inconvenience, fines’
Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog has encouraged Ilonggos to use pedestrian lanes and overpasses to avoid inconvenience and fines.
Mabilog also directed personnel of the Special Services Unit to direct pedestrians where to cross and to assist the elderly to the nearest pedestrian lane.
He said discipline and a little personal sacrifice will not only bring order in the streets but also minimize traffic accidents.
The mayor also told Senior Supt. Dennis Basngi, city police director, to station uniformed policemen close to the overpasses to deter petty criminals from victimizing pedestrians using the facility.
SSU were also instructed to keep vagrants or Badjaos and Atis from using the overpasses as sleeping quarters or comfort areas.
Mabilog said the bottom of overpass stairs should also be covered to prevent “peeping toms” from taking advantage of female users.
The mayor said the city government is now painting more pedestrian lanes and posting signages to encourage people to use them and avoid the fines and inconveniences of being caught for jaywalking.*
