VM wants junk shops out of city’s entrance
ROXAS CITY – “It’s good business but the stacking of junks, clutter and scrap materials has transformed the southwest entrance of Roxas City into a dumpsite.”
This was the observation aired by Vice Mayor Ronnie Dadivas in his privilege speech during Tuesday’s regular session as he proposed the transfer of the junk shops to the city’s interior.
He said the owners should be informed early which is just fair and proper.
“Obviously, the area is becoming an eyesore not only to the passing motorists and visitors but also to residents,” Dadivas said.
If the Land Use Regulatory Ordinance is properly enforced, he said, junkshops located in Cagay and Punta Tabuc cannot occupy these areas because these are classified as commercial C-1.
A junkshop is no ordinary retail business, the vice mayor said, adding that it is a type of business that may be categorized as medium or large scale industry as most junks and scraps are bought and sold in hoard or in bulk.
“Therefore, to relocate is a necessary act for the city. Should this business be transferred, it should be placed in the interior,” he said.
Dadivas referred the matter to the committee on zoning and land use development to review, evaluate, and recommend the relocation of these junkshops.
He also directed the Business Permit and Licensing Division to carefully look into, categorize and determine this type of business before renewing and issuing their business and licensing permits.
“We deem it necessary to relocate these junkshops without curtailing their right to engage in said business,” Dadivas added.*
