Female traffic enforcers deployed in city streets
The Land Transportation Office 6 has introduced last week an innovative approach to improve compliance on road rules compliance by public and private conveyances and also to foster better relations between apprehending authorities and the motorists.
Last Wednesday, the LTO 6 fielded 20 women as LTO enforcers in Iloilo as they stood side-by-side with their male counterparts by the roadside to check on vehicles which may have run afoul of the law.
Marlon Velez, chief LTO traffic enforcer, said the idea of having female apprehending officers on the streets is expected to reduce unpleasant confrontations which normally occur between male LTO enforcers and defiant drivers.
Although the deployment of women as LTO enforcers has raised eyebrows, Velez said he is optimistic that the sight of a woman armed with a disarming smile accosting a violator will give rise in a smoother implementation of LTO regulations.
Velez said that 38 women, all regular employees of LTO will be sent out to different provinces in Western Visayas. The female enforcers went through a competence training regimen.
They will be on the streets two hours every Wednesday starting this month.
So far, no hitches were encountered by the female enforcers on their first day of street work, Velez said.*PNA
