Capiz province is red tide free
ROXAS CITY – Capiz province, the seafood capital of the Philippines, is red tide free.
A report from Capiz Provincial Press Bureau revealed that based on the latest shellfish bulletin of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource dated October 7, all shellfish gathered in the province are safe for human consumption.
Areas in the province identified as red tide free are the coastal waters of Pilar, President Roxas, Pontevedra, Panay, Roxas City, Ivisan, and Sapian.
Latest laboratory results conducted by the BFAR show that shellfish collected in these areas are still negative of paralytic shellfish poison. This was the result of the intensive red tide monitoring campaign conducted by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist.
Red tide occurs when higher than normal concentration of the microscopic algae forms. People who eat oysters or other shellfish containing red tide toxins may become seriously ill with neurotoxin shellfish poisoning (NSP) or paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP).*
