WV joins 1st World Statistics Day
The Regional Statistical Coordination Committee in Western Visayas will join the rest of the world to mark the first observance of the World Statistics Day today, October 20.
Representatives of the member agencies and organizations of the RSCC 6 are expected to turn up as early as 5:30 a.m. for the “Hataw” which will be followed by a fun/leisure walk at Boardwalk, Mandurriao.
The activities were organized by the Bureau of Fire Protection, Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Department of Health to show unity with the world as it celebrates the 1st WSD and to usher the celebration in the region.
At 1 p.m., a program will be held at the Amigo Plaza Mall Activity Center highlighted by special statistical presentations prepared by the National Statistics Office 6 and the National Economic Development Authority 6. The activity will coincide with the closing of the statistical exhibit which opened October 11 in the same activity center as part of the National Statistics Month celebration.
Also, set to be launched during the program are the Statistical View of Western Visayas and the Search for Achievers in Statistics in Western Visayas.
In September 2008, the United Nations Statistics Division, in consultation with other countries and international organizations, endorsed to the UN Statistical Commission to observe for the first time the World Statistics Day on Oct. 20, 2010 to celebrate the achievements of official statistics and global statistical system.
The consultation solicited overwhelming support of around 75 countries and international organizations towards the initiative.
The following are the justifications of the countries for such initiative: the time has come to declare such a special day to celebrate all the achievements of official statistics; to enhance the visibility of official statistics at the national, regional and global levels; and WSD will serve as advocacy tool to further support the work of statisticians across different settings, cultures and domains.
“Celebrating the Many Achievements of Official Statistics” is the theme of the 1st WSD which emphasizes the core values of service, integrity and professionalism.
The regional celebration is spearheaded by the Task Force on World Statistics Day created by the RSCC 6 and chaired by the National Statistics Office.*PIA
