Dao opens FITS Center
The Western Visayas Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium recently opened in Dao, Capiz its 47th Farmers’ Information and Technology Services (FITS) Center in the region.
The launching was attended by some 200 farmers from the town’s 20 barangays.
The Dao facility is the fourth FITS Center in Capiz, marking WESVARRDEC’s commitment to extend unselfish services to farmer beneficiaries who will benefit from Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development’s Techno Gabay intervention in the countryside.
Mayor Joselito Escutin said he is looking forward to having a “helpful, useful and functional” farmers’ center which will cater to farmers’ needs and help provide livelihood for them.
Vice Mayor Loreto Eslaban also expressed optimism on the opening of the farmers’ center, saying the facility is not only for the farmers’ livelihood but for the future of the town as well.
The town of Dao is lucky for having taken the steps to realize their efforts for “sustainable agriculture,” he said.
Dr. Raul Ticar, director of Capiz State University Extension Institute, said their office will assist the Dao farmers in terms of livelihood trainings.
Ticar said he will help farmers further improve their agricultural practices.
Regional Applied Communications Group Coordinator Cora Navarra also gave a briefing on the consortium’s goals and particular targets for the newly launched FITS Center.
She said WESVARRDEC can help enhance the capabilities of local government unit staff through skills trainings and capability building activities.
Navarra also cited the benefits the farmers can get from the consortium, and urged the local government to make efforts to direct their activities for the farmers’ profitable production.
Assistant Provincial Agriculturist Elizabeth Betito congratulated Dao’s new partners and urged the farmers and other agriculture stakeholders to avail themselves of the publications and technology primers for farmers and agriculture practitioners.*
