60% of brgy. officials in WV newly elected
Sixty percent of the barangay officials in Western Visayas are newly elected and assumed office effective noontime of November 30, records of the Department of Interior and Local Government show.
Western Visayas has 4,050 barangays, and in the recent synchronized barangay and SK elections, each barangay elected one punong barangay and seven kagawads.
DILG 6 Regional Director Evelyn Trompeta said the punong barangays are the direct link of the government down to the grassroots.
“They provide leadership in the barangays, and they have dual functions. Unlike municipal mayors who function only as the executive, punong barangays act as the executive and perform other functions such as legislative and head of the katarungang pambarangay,” Trompeta said.
Meanwhile, `DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo called on the barangay officials to promote and practice good governance during their term.
Elected barangay officials nationwide play a vital role in ensuring the delivery of basic services to the people, Robredo added said.*
