Pacquiao unified the country
Iloilo City -- City Mayor Jerry Treņas said new super featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao has unified the nation when he had a rematch with Mexican Erik Morales last Sunday (Philippine time).
Treņas said Pacquiao became a symbol of unity as pro-administration and anti-administration leaders had one single desire, that is for him to win in the boxing fight. Pacquiao floored Morales in the 10th round to snatch a technical knock out victory.
No less then First Gentleman Mike Arroyo and several other congressmen went to the United States just to see the boxing rematch.
The entire Filipino nation hooked on their television sets to watch the boxing rematch last Sunday. Several people also made money because of the boxing fight. Betting could be seen everywhere, in streets, carinderias, offices and homes.
He said Pacquiao lift up the dignity of the Filipinos when he beat the Mexican boxer. The country should have more heroes like Pacquiao. The dignity of the Filipino people have been degraded because of the political turmoil, bickering and up rising against the government.
The mayor said the rematch gives an occasion for the Filipinos to shine in the whole world. He became a pride of the Filipinos. Pacquiao lost in his first bout with Morales on points in Las Vegas last March.
