Militants to mobilize Guimaras folk to push for re-floating of sunken tanker

While the National Disaster Cordinating Council (NDCC) recommended for the siphoning of the remaining bunker oil from the sunken MT Solar 1, militant groups have formed an alliance to push for the retrieval of the vessel which lies 640 meters below sea level off Guimaras island.

Stockpiles of oil sludge dumped on the shoreline blamed for high level of toxins

Stockpiles of collected oil sludge and debris dumped along the affected barangays in Nueva Valencia and Sibunag, which are yet to be barged out by Petron Corp., are blamed for the high level of toxins which caused respiratory illnesses among the residents.

Petron welcomes criminal charges

Petron Corporation said Friday that its officials will face the criminal charges filed by a Guimaras official over the oil spill.

"We will not run away. Petron is 40% owned by the Philippines. It is not a multinational company that would just fold up and run away. We will not do that," Petron spokesperson Carlos Tan told The News Today, as he maintained that they have not been remiss in their job.

Before yesterday's press briefing by the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council, Tan declared, "We will face all charges."

DA-DOH join forces on bird flu preparation

The Department of Agriculture, Regional Field Unit (DA RFU) 6 and the Department of Health (DOH) 6 join forces on the conduct of Avian Infuencia (AI) or Bird Flu Preparedness and Response Planning Workshop for the provinces of Aklan and Antique agricultural and health technicians. The four-day workshop which started on September 12, 2006 was divided into two seetings wherein the first two days was attended by participants coming from Antique and the remaining two days from the province of Aklan.

Petron given 10 days to come up with sludge disposal site

Authorities gave Petron Corporation a ten day period to be able to provide a treatment site for the oil sludge gathered in the ongoing clean up operations in Guimaras.

City dad lobbying for port operations?

City Mayor Jerry Treñas belied reports that Councilor Jose Espinosa III lobbied to him for the return of the port operation at Muelle Loney wharf to the Espinosa clan after the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) decided to bid the port operations.

DOH urges public of continued vigilance against dengue

Despite the decreasing trend of dengue cases in the region and no indications of clustering or outbreaks, the Department of Health - Center for Health Development in Western Visayas (DOH - CHD WV) advised the public anew to continue their vigilance and careful observance of sanitation for their own safety.
