As part of the city government's contribution in order to rehabilitate and preserve the Maasin watershed, some 5,000 seedlings of fruit bearing trees will be planted in this Friday's tree planting dubbed as "Avoid water shortage, Support Maasin Watershed."
City Environment and Natural Resources Office chief Noel Hechanova said the tree planting is set to create public support for the rehabilitation and preservation of the watershed. The activity is also in relation to the water shortage being experienced by the city dwellers.
City's water supplier Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) primarily gets water supply from Maasin watershed.
MIWD, however, currently implements water rationing because of lack of water supply from source as a result of dry months.
Hechanova said the fruit bearing seedlings will come from the Iloilo City Agriculture Office and the Provincial Agriculture Office.
Aside from the city government employees, representatives from DENR-CENRO, MIWD, Philippine Army, I-Stand, Convention Baptist Youth Fellowship Philippines, Green Forum and KAPAWA, a local peoples organization in Maasin will join in the undertaking.
Hechanova estimated that there will be 100 city government employees and 500 youth delegates from the Convention Baptist Youth Fellowship Philippines. The youth delegates are having a convention at the Central Philippine University.
The participants will converge 6 a.m. Friday at the Plaza Libertad and pick up the youth delegates at Central Philippine University before proceeding to the town of Maasin.
