P500 M worth of donations generated for library hubs
An estimated P500 million worth of donations in the form of infrastructure materials, furniture, computers and additional books were generated by the Department of Education for the 70 Library Hubs all throughout the country.
The DepEd press report disclosed that the donations came from the congressmen, governors, mayors, private companies and individuals who helped finance the construction of the library hubs.
These hubs are now equipped with books and other reading materials which can be accessed for free by public elementary and high school students.
Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said that the project was launched in 2003 to develop love and habit of reading among public school students.
Under the project's cost partnership scheme, the sponsor finances the building of the hub, while the DepEd provides the reading materials.
The DepEd aims to build at least one library hub in all 189 school divisions nationwide by 2010, said Secretary Lapus as he stressed that he envisioned the library hub to acquire more books not only for the younger children but also for the out-of-school youths and adults. (PIA 6/T.Villavert)
