Black Nazarene arrives today
ROXAS CITY – The Black Nazarene of Quiapo will arrive today in Sapian with many devotees expected to welcome and visit the pilgrim image.
Sapian Mayor Arturo Orosco Sr. said the pilgrim will arrive on board Philippine Airline at around 6 a.m. in Roxas City airport.
A caravan going to Sapian will follow. The motorcade of the Black Nazarene will pass through the Roxas Boulevard, Roxas Avenue, Bayot Drive, Punta Tabuc and Ivisan.
In Sapian, the pilgrim will stay until August 24.
This is the second time the pilgrim will visit Sapian, the first on Aug. 15 to 24, 2008.
Orosco and his wife Evangeline are active devotees of all kinds of religious statues in various parts of the country for the past 30 years.
The mayor said he is crediting his family’s success to their deep religiosity as shown by their active involvement in religious affairs.
The Black Nazarene is a burned life-size image of Jesus Christ carrying a cross. The statue was brought to Manila on May 31, 1606 by Augustinian Recollect missionaries from Mexico aboard a ship that caught fire.
Though the image was burned, people decided to preserve and honor it. Since then miracles have been reported by those who touched the image, prompting the Church to make the Black Nazarene the patron saint of Quiapo.*
